A March 2026 Verasight survey sets up a hypothetical: Republicans control the presidency and Congress, Democrats are threatening a government shutdown over an issue Americans care deeply about, and a longer standoff would make their own side more likely to get what it wants. Even then, 53% say no shutdown is acceptable and the two sides should compromise immediately.

One to two weeks of shutdown is acceptable to 17% of Americans, and about as many say it could run indefinitely, as long as it takes. A smaller share (10%) draws the line at three to four weeks, and just 3% would go one to two months.
