More than half of Americans (53%) count a savings account among their preferred places to invest, topping every other option, according to a January 2025 Verasight survey of 1,000 U.S. adults. Retirement accounts such as a 401(k) or IRA come next, preferred by 44%.

Individual stocks (27%) and mutual funds or ETFs (22%) also draw sizable followings, while relatively few prefer hedge funds (3%) or something else (5%). Nearly a quarter of Americans (24%) say they do not invest at all.
