Americans most define dignity as respect
Core finding
Asked what dignity means to them, Americans point above all to respect. More than six-in-ten (62%) describe dignity as a matter of respect, according to a September 2023 Verasight survey.
A slim majority (53%) also tie dignity to their values, and 43% to their sense of worth. Smaller shares connect it to a human right (38%), their actions (36%), a personal matter (28%) or their achievements (18%), while 4% say none of these fit.
