About three-in-ten Americans (28%) keep only a general idea of their monthly expenses rather than formally tracking them, a May 2026 Verasight survey finds. An additional 12% say they occasionally check their account balances but do not budget, and 5% do not look at their finances or track spending at all.

The more disciplined approaches each draw smaller shares: 23% set a rough monthly budget and track some spending, 18% set a detailed budget and track most income and expenses, and 13% assign every dollar to a budget category and track all money coming in and going out.
