Just over half define recovery housing as sober housing with peer support
Core finding
A narrow majority of Americans (51%) describe recovery housing as safe, sober housing with peer support and a connection to community services, according to a Verasight survey conducted Nov. 14-20, 2025.
About a quarter (24%) think of it instead as housing that provides substance use disorder treatment, usually for 30 to 90 days, and 15% say they do not know. Relatively few describe it as sober "flop houses" for people with addictions or criminal justice backgrounds (7%) or as housing that prioritizes access but does not require sobriety (3%).
