In a Verasight survey of 1,000 U.S. adults conducted Aug. 20 to 25, 2025, 80% of Americans chose a home-based arrangement when asked what they would prefer if a parent needed help living independently because of a health limitation.

The largest shares preferred having the parent live with them (28%), having the parent stay in their own home with help from them (27%), or having the parent stay in their own home with professional help (25%). Smaller shares chose assisted living (16%) or a nursing home (3%).
