More Americans bank with big national banks than any other type
Core finding
Nearly four-in-ten Americans (39%) name a large national bank as their primary financial institution, according to a December 2025 Verasight survey.
Credit unions rank next (18%), ahead of regional banks (13%) and fintech providers other than PayPal or Venmo (12%). Fewer name a community bank (9%), some other institution (6%), or no primary bank at all (2%).
