A majority don't see "Now is not the time to be hiding" as uncivil
Reading
The line "Now is not the time to be hiding" strikes most Americans as fair play. A 57% majority find the comment not uncivil, describing it as neutral, civil, or even nice rather than the kind of remark that shuts a conversation down, according to a January 2024 Verasight survey.
That leaves 43% who read it the other way: rude, disrespectful, or unreasonable enough to make a person leave a discussion or respond combatively.

Suppose a Republican member of Congress said: “Words matter, and it is time we start calling this situation what it really is: a crisis. In simple words, it is what it is. Don't try to paint it in many different ways. President Biden has invited this crisis through his words and in his executive actions, including terminating construction of the wall on our southern border. We need real leadership now. Now is not the time to be hiding.” Do you find this comment uncivil or not uncivil?
- Not Uncivil: A neutral, civil, or even nice comment, unlikely to discourage the conversation. 57.5%
- Uncivil: A comment that is rude, disrespectful, unreasonable or otherwise likely to make a person leave a discussion or respond combatively to the speaker. 42.5%
