Half of Americans say local sports teams are important to their city

In a Verasight survey of 1,000 U.S. adults conducted Aug. 20 to 25, 2025, 51% of Americans said their local sports team is at least somewhat important to their city. Including 25% who said very important and 25% who said somewhat important.
About one in five said their local sports team is unimportant to their city (21%), with 13% who said very unimportant and 7% who said somewhat unimportant. Another 29% were neutral.
